Description

1, The Forge is an early 18th-century cottage located in Chedworth village. It is one of two adjoining cottages and incorporates a former smithy, now a pottery. The cottage is constructed of thinly-bedded coursed limestone with dressed stone quoins, and has stone slate roofing to the main body, with Roman tile to the former smithy. A lean-to with a corrugated asbestos roof, which is not of special interest, adjoins the pottery.

The building comprises two parallel ranges, the southern one consisting of three phases. The main body of the cottage is two storeys and an attic and includes a 1 1/2-storey extension and a cellar. Fenestration consists of double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements with 1, 2, 3, and 4 lights, some featuring stopped hoods and early fastenings. A two-light hipped roof dormer is also present. There are part-glazed doors on the south-west front and a part-glazed door on the north. Gable-end stacks are visible on the main body, and an off-the-ridge stack on the former smithy. The interior has not been inspected.
