Description

College Barn is a detached house, largely dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, although it may incorporate a core from the late 17th or early 18th century at the rear. An attached barn, initialled JJ/1733, is also of the 18th century. The main body of the house is constructed of coursed, squared, and dressed limestone, with large alternate quoins. It has a brick stack set on an ashlar base. The building follows an ‘L’ shaped plan.

The main body of the house has a lobby entry, two storeys, and an attic with garret windows and two 20th-century skylights. The symmetrical front facade has three bays and a two-window arrangement. It features 16-pane sash windows within plain surrounds, with keystones above. A central keyed bulls-eye window is on the first floor, above an 18th-century six-panel front door, which is set back within a plain surround. A central axial stack is present, and the left gable has flat coping with a roll-cross saddle. A block sundial with a ball finial sits on the roof.

The rear barn has stone steps leading to a loft, with a partly glazed gable end. Internally, original roof trusses are retained in the barn. Group value is evident through the building’s contribution to the wider historic context.
