Description

The Old Bakery is a former village bakery, house, and barn, now a detached house, dating to the late 17th and early 18th centuries with 19th-century alterations. It is located on Chapel Street in Broadwell. The building is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone with a stone slate roof and ashlar stacks. It has an "L" shaped plan, including a 19th-century extension to the rear left and a former barn to the right of the main body. The facade faces the road. The building is two storeys and has a garret. It has seven bays and five windows, each with 2 or 3-light, double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements, featuring stopped hoods. A 2-light, stone-mullioned window was inserted in the blocked front doorway. A 20th-century plank door is located to the right. The former barn to the right has 20th-century steel casements with glazing bars and timber lintels. A flat gable end coping is present. The left gable end and rear gable end each have stacks with moulded cappings. The interior has not been inspected. The building demonstrates group value through its historic function and survival as a village bakery.
