Description

Avening House is a large detached house dating to around 1800, originally designed by Robert George and later enlarged in 1871 with the addition of two wings by William Clissold. The house is constructed of ashlar, with hipped tile roofs, two central chimney stacks, and a square glazed lantern. The central block features a cornice with a bedmould, dentils, and a blocking course, and extends over three storeys with seven windows – three on the central block. The windows are plate glass sashes. The ground floor features a Doric portico supported by four pillars, with a cornice and blocking course, and flanking windows with a plate glass sash above and twin casements below. The ground floor windows of the wings are also plate glass sashes.
