Description

Old Quarries is a large, detached house dating to the early 19th century, originally built as a private residence and later adapted for use as a home for people with mental handicaps. The house is square in plan and has a hipped slate roof concealed behind a parapet. The exterior is rendered.

The west-facing entrance front has three 12-pane sash windows. A central porch, featuring a cornice, a blocking course, and a keystone, provides access to double doors which are half-glazed with decorative tracery. Round windows flank the porch. The south-facing garden front exhibits a large, central, full-height canted bay window on the ground floor, also with sashes, and three 12-pane sash windows on the first floor.

The interior retains considerable original joinery. The main entrance hall contains a cantilevered stone staircase with a swept wooden handrail and wrought iron balustrade decorated with an acanthus leaf design. An oval skylight illuminates the stairwell.
