Description
No. 43 Long Street is a large former town house dating from the mid-17th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone with quoins and a plinth, topped by a Cotswold stone slate roof featuring two coped gables with finials and a parapet. An ashlar stack is located to the right, with two diagonally set ashlar flues that have moulded cornices. The building has a large front range and two lower parallel rear ranges, standing three storeys tall with an attic.
The façade includes three windows with moulded stone frames, mullions, and transoms, featuring 19th-century iron casements and leading, along with a continuous dripmould over the first and second floors. Each gable has a leaded two-light stone mullion window with a square hoodmould. The ground floor features stone mullion and transom windows, and to the left, there is a wide doorcase with a moulded stone architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a cornice, leading to an eight-panel door. Above the door, there is an 18th-century wrought iron grille and lamp bracket.
Inside, the property has an oak dog-leg staircase, and in the rear ranges, some lath and plaster walling remains on the top floor, where all original roof timbers are exposed.
