Description
39A and 39 Long Street is a former large town house, now divided into several units with ground floor shops. It dates from 1703, as indicated on the rear wall of No. 39a. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with chamfered alternating quoins, a stone plinth, a moulded wood cornice, and a single stone blocking course. It has a Cotswold stone slate roof featuring large stone end stacks, with a moulded stone cornice on the left and a brick top on the right.
The structure is a single range with a rear extension to No. 39 on the right side, standing three storeys high with a small central attic dormer that has a flat roof. There are seven windows on the first and second floors, each with moulded stone architraves and continuous dripmoulds. No. 39 has a 20th-century shop front on the right side and a door on the left that features six panels—four fielded with raised centres and two flush—along with a rectangular fanlight above that has a central diamond pane. Each floor above has four plate glass sash windows.
No. 39a has three stone mullion and transom casements on the second floor, 15-pane sash windows on the first floor, and two 15-pane sashes with new lintels on the ground floor to the left of the doorcase. The doorcase features fluted pilasters, an open pediment with a frieze and cornice, and a rectangular fanlight with a central diamond pane, similar to No. 39, along with a six-panel door. There are two stone steps leading up to both doors. The rear of No. 39a also includes some stone mullion and transom windows, and the interior retains an original oak dog-leg stair with twisted balusters and square newels.
