Description

Two cottages, Nos. 1 and 2, stand as an end-of-terrace pair. No. 1 likely dates from the mid to late 18th century, while No. 2 is probably from the late 17th or early 18th century. They are built of rubble stone, with the stone coursed at No. 1 and limewashed on the exterior of No. 2. The roofs are covered with concrete tiles, with a new stone stack at No. 2, which steps down in height towards No. 1. Both cottages have a single front range, with a rear extension to No. 2, and both are two storeys with an attic. No. 1 has one window on each floor, featuring paired wooden casements beneath timber lintels, alongside an attic window within the gable end. It has a door of four flush panels, also beneath a timber lintel, on its right-hand side. No. 2 has two windows, each with two-light chamfered stone mullions set within flush stone frames, holding wooden casement lights. Two similar mullioned windows are located below, and there is a central chamfered stone doorcase incorporating a large lintel and a door of four flush panels. A small gabled dormer is present. These two cottages, along with Nos. 10 and 11, are the least altered of a row which was likely constructed mostly in the late 17th or early 18th century and is believed to have served as tied cottages for the former Lechlade Manor (now demolished).
