Description
W. J. Castle, Butcher is a 16th-century butcher's shop located in a row of buildings in Northleach with the Green. The ground floor features ashlar stone, while the gable ends are also finished in ashlar. The first floor is jettied and has close-studded timber framing with plastered infill, topped by a stone slate roof and an ashlar stack. The building has a rectangular plan with later extensions at right angles at the rear. It is two stories high with a three-windowed facade. The shop front is canted and includes two 12-pane sash windows. There are also two small shutters for the smaller sash windows that light the splayed sides of the window. To the right, there is a four-panel stable-type door and a two-pane sash window. Double doors provide access to the rear on the right side. The left gable end features a stack and a flat coping. Inside, intersecting beams are visible within the shop, but the interior was not otherwise inspected.
