Description
Hazleton Manor Farmhouse is a large manor house with a west wing dating from the 16th century and a south wing likely from the 17th century, along with a significant early 20th-century extension at the east end. The building is situated on the site of a 12th-century priory associated with Kingswood Abbey. It is constructed from random coursed rubble stone on an offset plinth, topped with a stone slate roof and featuring large stone stacks.
The house has an 'L' shape, primarily two storeys with an attic. On the north side, there are two gables on the west wing and two on the south wing, forming the angle of the 'L'. These gables are coped and have ball finials, each adorned with 2-light cavetto moulded stone mullions and square hoodmoulds. The three gables on the south wing have similar 3-light windows on the first floor and 4-light windows on the ground floor, while the northernmost gable has a 2-light window on the first floor and a renewed 3-light window on the ground floor.
Between the gables on the south wing, there is a porch that rises to 2 1/2 storeys, faced in ashlar at the front. It features a similar 2-light window in the gable, a 3-light window on the first floor, and an arched doorway with a wide straight dripmould and a projecting keystone dated 1660, leading to a 20th-century vertical battened door. A 19th-century service wing has been added to the north in two sections, which includes 2-light leaded casements with straight voussoir heads and two blocked doorways.
To the east, there are two large additional gables from the early 20th century that are designed in a sympathetic style. The south elevation displays two projecting gables with a recessed centre, and similar fenestration to the north side, including two depressed Tudor-arch doorways at the centre and left. In the courtyard to the north, there is a square well house with a pyramidal roof and a ball finial.
Inside, the hall to the right of the porch features a fine oak staircase, panelled walls, and chamfered and stopped beams. Although the interior is not accessible, it is expected to be of interest.
