Description
The drinking fountain and horse trough, built in 1867-1868, is a Grade II listed structure located at the north end of High Street. It commemorates the first regular supply of pure water for the town and the generous donation of £2,000 by Joseph Chamberlayne, which allowed for the well to be dug deeper. The fountain features a Gothic design with four sides, a masonry pyramidal roof, and a poppyhead. Each face has a rough label above a cusped panel, and the structure includes two horse troughs, two drinking fountains, and a dog bowl. It replaced a horse pond at the junction of High Street and the Fosse Way.
