Description
The Old Toll House is a tollhouse that has been converted into a cottage, dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed from Cotswold stone rubble, with some dressed stone around the openings, and features a Cotswold stone roof. The building is a two-bay, single-depth house in the Gothic style, standing two storeys high with two windows that have pointed heads. A central gabled porch is a modern alteration, and there is a blind pointed niche above it. A gable stack is located to the right, while modern windows have been added to the side and rear.
Historically, this cottage was likely built around 1750-1760, although its architectural style suggests it may be from a slightly later period. The road was turnpiked in 1743, but the new bridge constructed in 1775 likely made the use of this cottage less practical, leading to its supersession in 1821. It is notable for being one of two toll houses that have survived in close proximity to each other.
