Description
The group of seven monuments, including the bale tomb of Joseph Whitford from 1722, is located about 8 to 16 meters southeast of the southeast aisle buttress in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary. The monuments consist of a bale tomb and six headstones from the mid to late 18th century, arranged in a row of eight, with the last two not considered of special interest. The bale tomb is made of limestone and features a spiral bale top in two sections, adorned with shell ends and a skull on the east side, and a leaf ball on the west. It has a moulded capping on a plain base, with plain ends. The south side is slightly fielded, with flanking strips that include recessed high relief carvings of cherub heads and ball flowers below. The north side has a slightly fielded center and wider flanking strips. The top of the west section is deteriorating. Among the headstones, two have high relief cartouches with cherub heads; one is very large with a low relief cartouche, while another has an additional stone touching the rear.
