Description

Stowell Mill is a former mill located by the River Coln, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed thinly-bedded limestone and random limestone, with dressed stone quoins and a stone slate roof. The main structure is rectangular, featuring two storeys and an attic, with single-storey and one-and-a-half-storey extensions at both gable ends.

The front of the main body has three windows, including a single-light, two-light, and three-light wooden casements with timber lintels. There is a shuttered window in the centre of the ground floor, aligned with the internal water wheel. A stable-type door is located at the far left, accessed by two stone steps.

On the rear elevation, there is a round-headed arch where the head race runs beneath the mill, along with a single-width doorway to the right and two shuttered windows on the first floor, one featuring a protruding iron wheel with curved spokes. The gable ends have two-light casements in the attic and blocked pigeon holes with landings above the windows. An open-fronted two-bay extension is present on the left gable end, while the opposite gable end has a double-width door on runners leading to the extension. Stone steps, positioned at right angles to the extension, provide access to a plank door leading to the loft, situated to the right of the double doorway. The interior is reputed to contain all the original machinery, but it is not accessible.
