Description
The Stableblock is a stable and domestic accommodation building from the late 19th century, likely designed by Sir John Belcher. It is constructed of limestone rubble with a stone slate roof and 20th-century stone stacks. The building is arranged around a four-sided courtyard, with the domestic accommodation located at the front.
The entrance front features one and a half storeys, with central double doors set within a moulded basket-headed surround that has a stopped hood, which continues over a panelled door to the left. There is a four-light stone-mullioned window above, along with small two-light and three-light stone-mullioned casements with transoms on either side. All openings on the entrance front have relieving arches above them. The attic is lit by six two-light roof dormers.
Inside, there is an intersecting barrel vault within the entrance passage. A colonnade of circular stone piers with moulded capitals runs along the rear wall of the entrance front. Opposite the main entrance, there is a panelled door within a round-headed surround featuring a keystone. Stable doors are located on three sides of the courtyard, and there are axial stacks. At the rear right-hand corner, there is a tile-hung clock turret topped with a pyramidal open-sided lantern.
