Description

Harrington House, dating to around 1730, is a regional example of a Palladian mansion, consisting of a central block flanked by lower wings. The left-hand wing incorporates older fabric. The house is constructed of ashlar, with rusticated quoin pilasters, a cornice, and a pediment resting on pilasters. It has two storeys, attics, and a basement, with the wings also being two storeys high. The front has five windows arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern, featuring sash windows with original glazing bars set in moulded architraves with segmental heads, keystones, and bull-nosed cills. The central doorway has rusticated Ionic pilasters, a cornice, a dentil pediment, and a partially glazed door with a fanlight above. A circular window is positioned within the pediment. A balustraded parapet is topped with vase finials. The Cotswold stone mansard roof has dormers hidden behind the parapet. A domed gazebo, topped with a ball finial and featuring a window facing in each direction, adds to the composition. The main roof is a double saddle design with ashlar end stacks. A stable wing is located to the left, characterised by mullion and transom windows and a panelled parapet. A more recent wing, built in 1922, matches the style and is positioned to the right. The garden front mirrors the main elevation, with a central Venetian stair window serving as a key feature. The surrounding walls are plain, with a parapet punctuated by balusters aligning with the dormers. The rusticated doorcase has a cornice and heavy keystones. The interior is notable for a wide stair hall with three turned balusters per tread, and doorcases featuring broken pediments. There is enriched plasterwork throughout. The drawing room is fully panelled and has a Rococo ceiling (in a muted style), along with a fireplace featuring a keystone mask. A secondary staircase has turned balusters and a closed string.
