Description

Banks Farm is a detached farmhouse with attached buildings that form two sides of a yard. The farmhouse likely has a core from the 17th century, featuring a rectangular stone plaque dated and initialled E S/E S/1736 set between the upper windows on the left. On the right, there is a circular stone plaque dated and initialled W A/1784, indicating two phases of rebuilding or extension from the 18th century. The outbuildings and barn date from the late 18th century to mid-19th century. The core and rear extensions are constructed from coursed, squared, and dressed limestone, while the 18th-century extensions are made of finely dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof and ashlar stacks. The barn and outbuildings at the rear have slate roofs.

The main body of the farmhouse is rectangular, with successive 18th-century extensions to the right of the 17th-century core. There is a projecting porch off-center to the right, an 18th-century extension at the rear left, and a 19th-century extension forming one side of the courtyard at the rear right. The 17th-century core is one storey and attic, lit by a single 2-light, stone-mullioned half dormer with leaded lights. The 18th-century section is two storeys and attic, featuring two 2-light roof dormers with leaded panes. The 18th-century extensions to the right have four tall double-chamfered, stone-mullioned windows with horizontal glazing bars, and a tall stair light on the far left. All windows in the mid-18th-century part have moulded hoods, which also cover the 1736 datestone and a blocked door below it. There is a fielded 6-panel door leading into a late 18th to early 19th-century porch off-center to the right, and a 20th-century part-glazed door on the far right. Attached at the rear right is a 19th-century former wash house, with the barn attached at right angles at the far gable end, creating two sides of a yard. The interior has not been inspected.
