Description
The Pigeon House is a detached house located on Packhorse Lane in Bibury. It dates back to the early 16th century, with later alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from random and coursed rubble limestone, featuring an ashlar chimney and a stone slate roof. It has a cross passage plan and stands two stories tall.
The east front of the house includes three half gables on the right side, each with timber casements, although the right gable is a late 20th-century addition. The windows are scattered across the façade, including two and three-light recessed chamfered mullioned casements with hoodmoulds. The central doorway features a 20th-century glazed door and a flat stone porch hood supported by shaped brackets. A central chimney rises from the ridge and has a restored octagonal shaft with lancet openings and an original crocketed spire top. To the left, there is a 20th-century single-storey addition that is not of special interest.
At the rear, there is one half gable with a two-light mullioned casement and another two-light window below it. The remaining windows are timber casements with timber lintels. Inside, there is a large central chimney stack that includes a 16th-century fireplace on the upper floor, complete with a projecting stone hood on shaped brackets. The roof features a single arched braced collar truss, with the curved feet of the rafters projecting below a later inserted ceiling.
The Pigeon House stands on an ancient packhorse route and is one of the earliest buildings in Bibury, retaining several original features. A dovecote is located to the north of the house.
