Description

The gate piers located on either side of the track to the right of Hillfoot Cottages were part of the former entrance to Burnt Norton Hall and date from the 18th century. There are two rectangular sandstone piers, each with moulded tops that rise to points. The right-hand pier features an inscription that reads 'SAMSON/BODDINGTON/MIDDLE 1786/BARTON/OXFORD IIIIII' on its back, along with the initials R.G. 1781 on the right side of the same pier. As of June 1984, the left pier is no longer standing. A similar inscription can also be found on a barn at Middle Norton Farm in Weston Subedge.
