Description

The Old School House and former stable attached is a farmhouse and stable that became a school house and is now a house, dated 1663 on the right-hand stop of the hood mould over the front door. The former stable, dating from the 17th or 18th century, is attached on the right. The house is constructed of ashlar and limestone rubble, with square timber framing at the left end. It has a limestone slate roof that is hipped on the left side. There is a group of three ashlar limestone stacks aligned with the front door, along with single ashlar stacks from the eaves on the left and far right front, featuring moulded upper and lower courses. The gable end has limestone coping with roll cross saddles similar to those on the dormer gables. The 17th or 18th-century stable is made of squared limestone with a limestone slate roof and consists of three bays, with a blocked single door on the left and a stable door on the right. The house has a lobby entrance plan with three rooms, one room deep, and a former dairy located on the far left. It is one storey and has an attic, featuring two gabled dormers from the eaves on either side of the front door. The fenestration is irregular, with 2, 3, and 4-light flat chamfered stone-mullioned windows that have leaded lights, some with stopped hoods and some without. There is an unpainted plank door off centre to the right, set in a depressed stone arch with a hood mould above, which has large diamond-shaped stops, with the left stop featuring rose decoration. A large stone fireplace is located to the left of the central stack.
