Description
Knowles Cottages is a detached house that is currently divided into two separate homes. Originally built in the 17th century, it has been encased in brick during the 18th century. To the right gable end, there is a single-storey outshut made of brick and limestone. The front facade is made of brick in an irregular bond, primarily using stretchers, while the rear features ground floor ashlar. The left gable end has a projecting limestone ashlar feature. The roof is a mansard style covered with limestone slate, and there is an ashlar limestone stack that rises from the left gable end to a brick chimney.
The building has two storeys and an attic, which is illuminated by three gabled dormers at the eaves. These dormers contain 2-light casements from the 18th or 19th century, featuring leaded lights. The main facade has three windows, which include 2 and 3-light metal casements from the 19th and 20th centuries; some of these have transoms and leaded lights, while others have horizontal glazing bars. There is a blocked stone-mullioned window in the left gable end. The facade also has three doors: a central part-glazed door from the early 20th century with a soldier arch above it, and plank and batten doors on either side, each with timber lintels.
