Description
This description covers a pair of chest tombs located in the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew, approximately 9 meters north of the main entrance. The tombs are dedicated to members of the Sty family and are made of limestone.
The first tomb, which is the closest to the churchyard entrance, is a pedestal tomb for Joseph Sty, who died in 1792, and his widow Mary, who died in 1826. It features raised inscription panels on the north and south sides, as well as at both ends. The tomb has a fluted frieze and is capped with a moulded margin and a stepped, hipped upper capping stone.
The second tomb, located about 1 meter to the north of the first, is dedicated to Sarah, the wife of Robert Sty, who died in 1747, and her daughter Sarah. This chest tomb has cartouche-like inscription panels on the north and south sides, which are adorned with marginal panels featuring draped decoration. The ends of the tomb also have cartouche-like inscription panels with cherubs' heads at the top. It is capped with a moulded margin and a hipped upper capping stone.
