Description
This is a 17th-century bale tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Paul, approximately one metre north of the Shayler monument. It is likely dedicated to a member of the Shayler family and is made of limestone. The tomb features a moulded base, with the north and south sides divided into three panels that have raised margins. The central panel contains a raised oval with an undecorated shield inside. There are raised palm leaf decorations in the panels on either side. The east end has a panel with a narrow raised margin, while the west end has a probable former inscription panel with a raised margin, though the inscription is now illegible. The tomb is capped with a flat-chamfered stone that has roll moulding around its lower edge, and above it is a semi-circular 'bale' stone adorned with diagonal ribbing and simple incised decoration at either end.
