Description
There are four chest tombs located 25 and 30 yards southwest of the porch of the Church of St Peter in Upper Slaughter. These tombs date from the early 19th century and are a local type. They are made of ashlar stone and feature fluted corner pilasters. The two tombs furthest from the church have oval panels with carved husk decoration and a stepped capping with a roll-ridge. The tombs commemorate: a) William Cook, who died in 1831, b) Sarah Cook, who died in 1835, c) Thomas Loc, who died in 1821, and d) William Loc, who died in 1838. These chest tombs stand out in the churchyard, which mainly contains 17th and 18th-century headstones, and they are of good design. At the time of the last survey in 1981, only one tomb was reported as damaged.
