Description
A cottage square dating from 1906 to 1913, attributed to Lutyens. The buildings are constructed of rubble with Cotswold stone roofs and stepped stone chimneys. The design features a regular asymmetry on a rectangular plan, with an open north-east corner, and embodies a picturesque Cotswold style. The square consists of one storey with attics, with mullion windows containing leaded casements and Cotswold gables. Number 8 has a hipped dormer to the rear. Tudor arch doorways are present, featuring panelled spandrels and panelled doors. A through-passage connects numbers 5 and 6. Number 8 is accessed via a lean-to with a gabled central entrance. To the east, numbers 1 and 2 have a more regular front, displaying two gables and four windows, and incorporate an earlier pair of 17th-century cottages and a row of buildings originally intended for parish paupers. The north side features gabled projections with lean-tos on the inner slopes at numbers 2 and 4, and a gabled two-storey projection at number 3. Inside the square, the combination of roof slopes and gables creates a picturesque appearance. The square is considered an excellent example of town planning on a village scale, skillfully using traditional materials and shapes.
