Description
This summerhouse, located in the woods about 100 meters southwest of the center of Wiltshire Bridge, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed from rubble stone that contains fossilized material and small amounts of semi-precious stones, which were not quarried locally. The roof is made of Cotswold stone slate. The building has a square shape with three lancet arches on the front, while the sides feature two smaller, blind arches with a parapet wall above. There are two open arches on the sides, and at the rear, there is a pointed niche that once contained a chimney; the chimney stack is located on the rear wall and topped with a pyramidal stone cowl. It is reputed that the poet Gilbert White used this summerhouse, which was formerly situated on land owned by Barton Abbotts.
