Description
The two Thomas monuments are located about 15 meters south of the nave in the churchyard of the Church of St. Swithin. These are both bale tombs, with Elinor Thomas's tomb dating from 1685 to the south and William Thomas's tomb from 1677 to the north. They are made of limestone.
Elinor Thomas's tomb features a spiral bale top with fan ends, set on a moulded capping and plinth. The sides are plain, with recessed end panels that include an inscription on the west side and the initials "ET" on the east side.
William Thomas's tomb also has a spiral bale top, but with a concave end that displays a cherub head and wings on the west side, and a mask in a flat surround on the east side, all on a moulded capping and plinth. The lyre ends include a wreathed oval panel with rosettes on the east side, and the well-preserved west end features a head and wings above a small oval panel in a carved surround, adorned with vigorous acanthus and floral decoration. The sides are recessed with deep moulding, and the north side has hanging drapery flanking the inscription. Both tombs are set together on a surround of headstones, which are likely mainly from the 19th century.
