Description
The wall with doorways located to the south and east of the Church of St Giles is likely from the 17th century. It is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, faced in ashlar on the southern side. The wall has an 'L'-shaped plan, consisting of an east-west section and a north-south section, each approximately 25 meters long. This wall once screened Coberley Court, which was demolished in 1790, from the church and was originally part of a larger structure.
From the south, the wall features a round-headed doorway with a dressed moulded surround, a pulvinated frieze, and a triangular pediment that once led into a formal garden to the west of Coberley Court. There is early graffiti depicting a bearded man, and remnants of a return wall that used to extend southward. Additionally, there is a low round-headed doorway, now blocked, with a moulded surround, keystone, and imposts that previously opened into the garden north of Coberley Court. To the right, there is a single-light splayed window with a moulded and lugged surround, and a similar window is found on the east-facing side of the wall near the corner, which features banded rustications. The north-south section retains battlements with roll-moulded merlons and embrasures. An engraving from around 1712 by Kip, featured in Atkyn's "The History of Gloucestershire," also illustrates this wall.
