Description

Painswick Lodge is a pair of semi-detached houses located on Shurdington Road in Cheltenham, built around 1820 to 1850. The houses are constructed of stucco over brick and feature a hipped slate roof with stucco ridge stacks, along with iron railings.

The exterior consists of two storeys with three first-floor windows, and a service range on the left side. The design includes Doric pilasters at the ends and a first-floor band. The windows are 6/6 sashes set in plain reveals with sills. The central entrance features a three-panel door with sidelights and an overlight with glazing bars, all within a porch supported by paired pilasters. The service range has an 8/8 sash and a 2/2 horizontal-pane sash on the first floor.

On the Shurdington Road facade, which is the right return, the building has two storeys with attics and basements, featuring five first-floor windows plus one additional window. A bow window extends from the basement through the ground floor. The stucco detailing includes Doric pilaster strips at the ends and between the windows, which rise from a band at the ground floor and interrupt the first-floor band. The windows on the ground floor have tooled architraves, cornices, and recesses beneath, with original 6/6 sashes in plain reveals and with sills. The right end entrance is set back, with a flight of roll-edged steps leading to a four-panel door with overlights featuring glazing bars. There are also two 20th-century roof dormers.

The interior has not been inspected. Notable subsidiary features include blind boxes on the ground floor to the left, and the railings beside the steps, which have embellished rods and a wreathed handrail.
