Description
Brooks Lodge and attached area railings is a villa dating from around 1840, with a 20th-century garage added on the right. The building features stucco over brick, a hipped stucco roof, tall end stucco stacks, and iron area railings. It stands two storeys high with a basement and has three first-floor windows. The exterior includes stucco detailing such as a ground-floor band, horizontal rustication with elliptical arches of voussoirs over the windows, and a moulded first-floor band. The first-floor windows are framed with tooled architraves. Access to the central entrance is via a flight of six roll-edged steps leading to a part-glazed four-panel door, which is flanked by side-lights and topped with an overlight, all within a solid porch supported by two pairs of Doric pilasters. The ground floor features tripartite windows with 6/6 sashes between 2/2 sashes, while the first floor has 6/6 sashes and the basement has 12/12 sashes. The interior has not been inspected. The area railings display an X-motif, and there are window boxes at the ground floor. Historically, The Park was laid out by Thomas Billings by 1833 as an oval tree-lined drive with a central park, which briefly became a zoological garden in the mid-19th century. In 1839, the development was acquired by Samuel Daukes, who continued the building efforts. This villa is part of a significant development influenced by the designs of John White and John Nash for Regent's Park in London, created between 1809 and 1811.
