Description

The Catherine Best monument is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, approximately 12 metres south of the tower. This tall Gothic-style monument commemorates Catherine Best, the widow of John Rycroft Best and the youngest daughter of Richard Count de Vins, who died in 1855, along with other family members. It is made of limestone and features a large bronze plaque. The base has inscriptions on the east and north sides, and above it stands a tall rectangular column with a pointed-arched recess that contains a bronze plaque depicting a life-size figure of an angel in relief. The angel holds a cloth with an additional inscription. At the top, there is a cross finial, although the corner pinnacles are now missing. The monument is enclosed within a rectangular area surrounded by spear-headed railings.
