Description
The Allen family monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, approximately 20 metres south of the vestry. It commemorates Lieutenant Colonel James Allen of Inchmartine, Perthshire, who died in 1839, along with other members of the Allen family. The monument is made of sandstone and has a square plan. It originally featured a flat top with a railing that has since been removed. The base has a moulded plinth, and the west side includes an inscription dedicated to Colonel Allen, flanked by fluted marginal panels. Additional inscriptions can be found on the south and east sides. The north side is adorned with the family crest, which depicts a winged bird accompanied by the motto 'FORTITER' below. The monument is topped with a stepped pyramidal capping and was previously highlighted in cream and black paint.
