Description
The Francis Kemmet(t) monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, approximately 3 metres north of the north aisle. It commemorates Francis Kemmet(t), who died in 1716. The south side features a partially legible inscription dedicated to him, while the north side has partially legible inscriptions for John and William Kemmet. The monument is made of limestone and includes oval inscription plaques on both the north and south sides, each surrounded by raised, roll-moulded edges adorned with laurel-leaf carvings. At the corners, palm-leaf fronds are flanked by putti, which once held objects in their hands that have since been removed. The outer panels display hanging drapery tied with ribbons at the top. The west end has an oval inscription with an illegible text, bordered by a raised roll-moulded margin featuring scrollwork decoration. The upper part of the tomb is decorated with deeply carved winged cherubs' heads. There is also a similar plaque at the east end with an illegible or unused inscription. The tomb is capped with a thick moulded margin, making it an unusually bold and richly detailed example.
