Description
Numbers 45 to 71 and attached railings are a terrace of 14 houses built around 1830 to 1850. They were shown as laid out and partially constructed on a map of 1834. The houses are stucco-faced over brick, with concealed roofs, pinkish-brown brick party-wall stacks, and iron railings and balconies. They are designed with a double-depth plan, incorporating side hallways and two-storey service ranges to the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high, with three windows per house. Architectural details include a continuous crowning frieze and cornice, a low coped parapet, and a first-floor band running along Numbers 61 to 71. The entrances to Numbers 61 to 71 have architraves, while Numbers 51 to 59 feature full-height Doric pilasters. The terrace ramps downwards between Numbers 61 and 63. The windows are predominantly 6/6 and 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes, with the central first-floor window of each house being blind. All windows are in plain reveals with sills. The entrances are mostly 4-panel doors with sidelights and overlights, or 6-raised-and-fielded-panel doors with a fluted frieze and overlights, some with decorative glazing bars and margin-lights. The interior was not inspected.
Subsidiary features include arrowhead-shaped railings to the sides of the steps, and some balustrades with an X-motif design. Number 45 has an ornate balconette to the ground floor and a first-floor balcony with embellished rods to its right return.
