Description

The Bell Inn is an inn built around 1800 to 1820, with later alterations, including modifications to the ground floor around 1900. It features a stucco exterior over brick, with a concealed roof and a brick and stucco stack at the right end, along with wrought-iron window guards.

The building has two storeys and two first-floor windows. The first floor displays tall 6/6 sash windows, while the second floor has 3/3 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. It is topped with a frieze, cornice, and a blocking course with copings. The ground floor has a central 20th-century glazed door within an architrave, flanked by sidelights and an overlight. There are plate glass windows with decorative upper glazing and aprons featuring a tile panel with the pub name, 'Bell Inn', situated between pilasters. The left return has two pairs of first-floor windows, with taller 6/6 sashes at the front and blind or replacement windows on the second floor.

Inside, the ground floor was remodeled in the 20th century. The first floor includes individual balconies at the front and two on the return, adorned with embellished rods. Historically, the inn is noted on maps from around 1830 and features wrought-ironwork typical of Cheltenham from 1800 to 1820. It stands as a well-preserved example of a purpose-built inn located on a major approach road to Cheltenham and has group value with the nearby Bath Tavern at No. 68.
