Description

Appletree Cottage is a small, detached cottage likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, and extended later by one bay. The walls are rendered stonework, with some remaining traces of timber framing, and the roof is thatched. The cottage may have begun as a single, heated room with a gable entry and an attached farm outbuilding to the left, with a room added to the right. The location of the staircase is currently unclear. The front, facing the garden, has three oriel windows with stone slate pent roofs, and two eyebrow dormers. The right return side has a 2-light casement with a plastic frame at the upper level; the gable facing the road has a 2-light casement above a similar window in a thatched extension. The back of the cottage features two eyebrow dormers on the right and a small window in the centre, with a projecting bread oven set below the dormers. All windows are late 20th-century wood replacements. A small stack is located on the former right gable.

The interior has been significantly modified, but some timber framing remains visible in the internal wall near the road end. The roof has rough principals, ties, and purlins, along with early, rough rafters. In the section nearest the road, the roof is constructed with split poles, possibly indicating a former outbuilding. A 19th-century bread oven is located in the centre room at the back, without a flue. The cottage is a rare surviving traditional building within an area developed in the late 20th century.
