Description
Old Swindon House is a semi-detached house built in the late 18th century, with possible extensions from the early 19th century. The exterior features incised render and a slate roof, which has one rendered and one brick chimney stack. The house has a basic rectangular plan and includes brick outbuildings attached at the rear right, although these are not of special interest.
The two-storey structure has a four-windowed entrance front, with the two left-hand bays set back slightly. The far right-hand bay features tripartite sash windows on both the ground and first floors, each with moulded architraves. To the left, there is a 19th-century three-panelled door located within a flat-roofed open-sided porch that has a moulded cornice. Above the door is a single 12-pane sash window with a moulded architrave. The two bays set back on the left also have twelve-pane sashes.
A moulded cornice runs along the eaves, and there is a Venetian window on the right-hand return. The garden front is arranged with a 1:2:1 window configuration and has a triangular pediment over the central two bays. The first floor of the left and right-hand bays features Venetian windows, while the ground floor of the right-hand bay has a canted bay. The central two bays on the first floor have twelve-pane sashes with horns, and there is a single 12-pane sash on the ground floor set within a former doorway, alongside 20th-century French doors to the left.
A sandstone sundial with a metal gnomon and a segmental hood, possibly dated 176-, is located in the garden. It is worth noting that the current garden front may have originally served as the entrance front before the main road through Swindon village was redirected in the 19th century. The interior of the house has not been inspected.
