Description
The Neptune Fountain, located approximately 100 meters southwest of the main entrance to the Municipal Offices in Cheltenham, is a Grade II listed structure inaugurated in 1893. It was designed by Joseph Hall, the Borough Engineer, and constructed by RL Boulton and Sons of Cheltenham. The fountain is made of Portland stone and is overpainted. It features a depiction of Neptune being drawn by four sea-horses, with tritons on either side blowing conches. The fountain is set on a ranged oval base surrounded by shallow steps that lead to a pool, and it is enclosed by a stone balustrade adorned with carved urns. The design is inspired by Rome's Trevi Fountain. Historically, the Promenade was established in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue connecting the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa, which is now the site of the Queen's Hotel.
