Description

The Old Lodge is a villa dating to around 1830, with later additions. It is constructed of stucco over brickwork, with a concealed roof. The building follows a double-depth, central hallway plan.

The exterior is two storeys high and features three windows on the first floor. Stucco detailing includes a first-floor band surmounted by pilaster strips at the ends of the building and between the windows. These pilasters rise to cambered arches above the windows and connect to a low parapet. The windows are 2/2 sashes throughout, with the ground-floor window on the right being a tripartite design between two 2/2 sashes. The central entrance has a 3-panel door with a fanlight, set within a round-arched surround with deep reveals, all in tooled stucco. Similar stucco detailing is present on the return side of the building.

Inside, original joinery is noted, including panelled shutters. The Old Lodge is part of a significant group of buildings around Wellington Square and forms a key subsidiary element within that group. It may have originally been built as a nurseryman’s house.
