Description
The railings and gate piers located in the south-west corner of Wellington Lodge and Clive Lodge date from around 1830 to 1834. They are made of cast iron with wrought iron dog-rails and feature a pair of ashlar piers. The railings have an arrowhead design with twirled dog-rails, and there are panelled and enriched iron piers at intervals, decorated with double-headed anthemion motifs. At the center, there is an octagonal ashlar pier with a shaped cap. The south end features double gates with panelled gate piers, along with a similar pedestrian entrance. There is an additional range of arrowhead railings at an angle to the south, forming an arc that connects to another range. Historically, these railings marked an area that was a Botanic Garden for Richard Ware, as noted on Merrett's 1834 map, and likely enclosed the entire area. Chatwin described them as "the most beautiful wrought railings and panels in the town," highlighting their significance as a feature of the streetscape. Clive Lodge is not included in this listing.
