Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, Tregenna (No. 16) and Rowanleigh (No. 17), were built between 1835 and 1836 as part of the development of Wellington Square in Cheltenham. The construction uses ashlar stone with a brick core, with a concealed roof, and a stuccoed party-wall stack. The villas are two storeys high with a basement, featuring six windows on the first floor (arranged 3:3). They have a double-depth plan incorporating outer hallways. The ashlar detailing includes a ground-floor band, Doric pilasters, a moulded first-floor band, a crowning entablature, and a blocking course. Tooled architraves frame the windows, with first-floor windows featuring corbel brackets supporting sills. The windows are predominantly 6/6 sashes on both the ground and first floors, with 4/8 sashes in the basement. Flights of roll-edged stone steps lead to the entrances, which have basket-arched openings with pilasters. Recessed 5-panel doors are fitted with sidelights and overlights featuring margin-lights. The interior of the buildings has not been inspected. Subsidiary features include stick railings to the sides of the steps and area arrowhead railings. Individual balconies are present on the ground floor, decorated with scrolled heart motifs. The buildings were constructed as part of a development undertaken for Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842, with the overall layout designed by the architect John Forbes. The listed buildings of Wellington Square together form a notable group, arranged around a central grassy area.
