Description

This is a villa, built between 1839 and 1840. Originally known as Clarence Villa, it was constructed as part of the development of the Pittville Estate in Cheltenham, designed by architect John Forbes and laid out in the late 1820s. The square itself was named after the Duke of Clarence, later William IV.

The building is stucco over brick, with concealed roof and tall brick stacks topped with cornices. It has iron railings. The villa is two storeys high, with three windows on the first floor. There’s a recessed service bay to the left return and a single-storey porch to the right return. Stucco detailing includes banded rustication to the ground floor, a first floor band, end pilasters, an architrave, frieze and cornice. The ground floor has 1/1 sash windows; the first floor, 6/6 sashes, with a 2/2 sash to the service bay. Basement windows are 6/6 sashes. The porch features a flight of roll-edged steps leading to a five-panel door with an overlight. The porch itself has banded rustication and voussoirs, a cornice and blocking course.

The interior has not been inspected.

Attached to the sides of the steps are iron railings with stick balusters.
