Description

This is a barn dating from the early 17th century, which has had its roof re-slated at a later date while retaining the original structure. It is built from granite rubble with granite dressings and features a slate roof. The barn is a large threshing barn with a central midstrey, characterized by large granite quoins and a wide, chamfered, 4-centred arched granite doorway. There is a 2-light hollow-chamfered granite casement window with a hood-mould above, and a cross finial. To the left side of the midstrey, there is another 4-centred arched doorway, while the front entrance has double doors with raised fillets that open at both the lower and upper sections; ventilation slits are located to the right and left.

The barn is connected to Walreddon Manor by a small porch block that features a 4-centred arched granite chamfered and stopped doorway. The left gable end has ventilation slits, one at the top with a dripstone, both set in granite surrounds, while the right gable end has similar slits without dripstones. The rear of the barn has a central gabled midstrey with a cambered timber lintel and doors similar to those at the front. There is a stable door to the right with a ventilation slit above, and an outshut addition to the left with two doors.

Inside, the barn has a 12-bay roof with collars halved to the faces of the principals, which have slightly curved feet set on a wall-plate. There are four rows of purlins and a ridge purlin. The south wall features three cantilevered timbers that curve upwards, the purpose of which is uncertain. The openings have splayed reveals and granite quoins on the inner side of the front midstrey, with a window above that has a hollow-chamfered inner surround and a mullion.
