Description

Seldon Cottage and 1 and 2 Rectory Cottages are three attached cottages that may have originally been one house. Seldon Cottage, likely built in the mid to late 17th century, is constructed differently from the other two cottages, which were possibly extended and partly rebuilt in the 19th century. The buildings feature rendered cob and rubble walls, with Seldon Cottage having a gable-ended slate roof, while the Rectory Cottages have a gable-ended thatch roof. A large projecting rendered rubble stack is located at the front of Seldon Cottage, and there are rendered brick stacks at the right gable end of the Rectory Cottages and a brick axial stack.

In terms of layout, Seldon Cottage is on the left and has a two-room plan with a central passage, where the left-hand room is heated by a front lateral stack. In the 19th century, it was extended at the rear to create a double-depth layout. No. 2 Rectory Cottage in the center has a two-room plan, while No. 1 to its right has a one-room plan; together they may have originally formed a three-room-and-through-passage plan house.

The exterior of Seldon Cottage features an asymmetrical one-window front with a projecting lateral stack on the left side, a 20th-century two-light casement window on the first floor to the right, and a three-light late 19th or early 20th-century casement window below. To the left, there is a 20th-century timber lattice open-fronted porch with a 19th-century four-panel door behind it. Nos. 1 and 2 Rectory Cottages have an asymmetrical three-window front, with two 20th-century two-light casements on the left for No. 2. There is a 20th-century part-glazed door to the right of center, and No. 2 has late 20th-century PVC two-light windows and a 20th-century glazed door at the center under a gable doorhood.

Inside, Seldon Cottage does not exhibit any early features, and its fireplace has been rebuilt. The Rectory Cottages have rough wany ceiling joists and party-rebuilt open fireplaces with wooden lintels.
