Description

Exbourne Road Cottages, Nos 1 and 2, are a pair of cottages that were originally built as one house, likely in the mid-17th century, with later additions from the late 17th century and 19th century. The cottages feature plastered cob walls and a gable-ended thatched roof. There is a brick stack at the left end and an axial brick stack, along with a projecting rendered rubble or cob stack at the right gable end that has a brick shaft. Additionally, there is a large projecting rubble gable end stack with a brick shaft serving the rear wing.

The original layout was probably a three-room-and-through-passage plan, with the lower end on the left now functioning as a separate cottage. The hall is heated by the stack at its higher end, while both the lower and inner rooms are heated by gable end stacks. A small heated wing behind the hall, likely built as a kitchen, has only loft space on the first floor. There are also 19th and 20th-century rear outshuts on either side of the wing.

The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with four windows, featuring 19th and 20th-century two-light casements, some of which have small panes. To the left of the centre, there are two 20th-century plank and glazed doors. Behind the right-hand end, there is a thatched roof outshut with a small wing adjoining at the centre and a later outshut beyond it.

Inside, the right-hand cottage has an open fireplace in the hall with a high concealed wooden lintel and an oven. The rear wing contains roughly chamfered joists and wooden newel stairs. In the left-hand cottage, the feet of rough straight principal rafters are visible on the first floor, but there is no access to the roof space.
