Description
A pair of houses located in Sampford Courtenay, dating from around the mid-17th century. The walls are of plastered cob, and the roof is thatched, gabled on the left and hipped on the right. There are two brick chimneys: one central, and one at the left gable end.
The houses originally had a two-room plan; the left-hand room in each was heated. It is thought they might initially have been a single house, extended and subsequently subdivided. No. 2, on the left, has a rear projection containing a newel staircase.
The front of No. 2 has a regular two-window arrangement of early 20th-century two-light casement windows, with the exception of a small-paned window on the first floor right, which is likely from the 19th century. A large, 19th-century lean-to porch is centrally located, with a 19th-century panelled and part-glazed door. No. 1, on the right, has an asymmetrical three-window front with 20th-century two-light casement windows. It also has a wide, 19th-century lean-to porch, incorporating a shed on the left-hand end, and open-fronted with a 19th-century panelled and part-glazed door. At the rear of No. 2, a semicircular projection houses the staircase.
The interiors were inaccessible at the time of survey, but are likely to contain features such as open fireplaces and exposed beams. A newel staircase is probable, and early roof trusses may also survive.
