Description

Paize Farmhouse is a farmhouse with probable early 16th-century origins, remodelled in the 17th century. The walls are rendered cob, and the roof is gable-ended thatch. A brick stack sits at the left gable end, and there is a granite axial stack with a dripcourse.

The plan consists of two rooms with a central through-passage, the lower end positioned to the left. The hall stack backs onto the passage, and the lower end stack may be an insertion.

Externally, the building is two storeys with an asymmetrical four-window front of 20th-century date, featuring one, two and three-light casements. A 20th-century stable-type door sits to the left of centre. Immediately to its right is a wide 17th-century studded plank door with trident hinges, set in an ovolo-moulded worn wooden frame whose left-hand jamb has been replaced. In a later outbuilding adjoining the house to the right is an early 16th-century shouldered-head wooden doorframe which is very likely to have come from the house.

The interior was inaccessible at the time of survey, but it is likely to contain interesting features including a medieval roof structure.
