Description
Helstone Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, with a possibly older wing, that has been significantly modernised around the mid-19th century. The building features rubble walls, which are rendered at the rear and slate hung on the first floor at the front. It has a gable-ended slate roof and a projecting rubble stack at each gable end, with the stacks on the left-hand end and rear wing being rendered. There is also a projecting rendered rubble lateral stack at the rear.
The rear wing, which has a gable end stack and an adjoining stair projection, may be the oldest part of the house. A three-room-and-through-passage plan was added at right angles to the higher left end in the 17th century. This addition included a lower room to the left, with the inner and lower rooms heated by the gable end stack, while the hall was heated by the rear lateral stack, possibly with stairs in a projection adjoining.
The house underwent considerable internal modernisation in the mid-19th century, likely concealing original features such as beams and open fireplaces, and blocking the rear of the passage. It is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front, primarily featuring three-light, small-paned casements. The first-floor window left of centre is a two-light window, with this window and the one to its right dating from the 18th century and featuring H-hinges and surviving old glass. The other windows are likely from the 19th century.
To the left of centre, there is a small 20th-century slate-roofed porch with double-glazed doors, and a 19th-century part-glazed door behind it. At the rear, to the right of the lateral stack, is a small rectangular projection, probably for a staircase, though it is unclear if it is original. A similar projection is found on the outer face of the rear wing adjoining the stack. The interior has not been inspected but is believed to contain visible early features. The house maintains an attractive traditional exterior and is likely to conceal some early internal features.
