Description

The farm buildings forming a small planned farmyard are located to the northwest of Beara Farmhouse and date from around 1856, likely built at the same time as the farmhouse. They were designed for the Bedford Estate. Constructed from stone rubble with slate roofs, the buildings include a threshing barn that features large pieces of local quartz in its masonry.

The north range is two stories high and consists of the threshing barn, which has an open-fronted shelter shed with a loft above it on the right, and an engine house at the rear. There is a loft entrance in the barn, sheltered by a canopy supported by brackets, which connects at first floor level to what was likely a fattening house that projects into the center of the yard. To the right of the fattening house, stone walls create a foldyard with splayed corners and a cart entrance for access to the rear of the stalls.

The south range includes a calf-house or shippon with three entrances and an adjoining carthouse. The west range consists of one single-storey building and a smaller building with a loft above. The north side of the farmyard is bordered by a largely rebuilt stone rubble wall leading to the foldyard. Overall, this modestly-scaled but relatively unspoilt farmyard features an attractive barn that complements the farmhouse. The 7th Duke of Bedford was known for his improvements to the farms on the Tavistock Estate, as detailed in David Spring's book, "The English Landed Estate in the Nineteenth Century" published in 1963.
