Description
Stowford House Hotel is a hotel that was formerly a rectory, built in the early to mid 19th century. It features whitewashed rendered brick with a hipped slate roof and rendered stacks at both ends. The main block is double depth with a rear central stair hall, and the entrance is located at the right-hand end. There is a rear right wing that may have been rebuilt from an earlier house and was used as service rooms. The building has three storeys and a three-bay symmetrical front with original windows. The ground floor has large tripartite sash windows, with the central light having 6 panes over 9 and the outer lights having 2 panes over 3. The first floor features a middle window that is a 12-pane sash, while the flanking tripartite sashes have a central 12-pane light and outer 4-pane lights. On the second floor, the middle window has 3 panes over 6, and the flanking tripartite sashes have a central light of 3 panes over 6 and outer lights of 1 pane over 2. The front door, located at the right-hand end, has 10 fielded panels and an elliptical fanlight with spider's web pattern glazing bars. Inside, there is contemporary joinery, including a deep skirting board, 6-panel doors, shutters, and a full-height stair with landings featuring stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. The principal room includes a cornice and ceiling rose, along with a fireplace from the early 20th century designed in an 18th-century style, featuring egg and dart moulding and festoons.
